Watervale Attractions

Watervale is a small area nestled at the center of Clare Valley. A beautiful town that is encompassed by vineyards and is positioned 118 kilometres up north of Adelaide at the Southern part of Clare Valley region, The name originated in 19th century and was coined when travellers complained that they arrived in Watervale but they cannot find any water at all.

The town was generally a result for the work of David Davies at around 1840’s. It became a significant settlement. Schools like the Old Stanley Grammar, and churches like Uniting Church and the Methodist were founded. The newly restored buildings are now part of the National Trust building that gives the town a piece of history to treasure.

Some of the best attractions in Watervale are as follows:

Annie’s Lane at Quelltaler Estate. Is one of the premier wineries that were around since 1863 until now. Annie’s Lane is one of the many heritage sites which are located in Watervale 135 km north of Adelaide.

Clos Clare. Founded in the year 1993 by Tom and Sam Barry, grandchildren of Jim Barry, Clos Clare is a small winery that is worth a visit. The 2 grandsons own a little less than 2 hectares of Riesling in the area.

Positioned in the middle part of Watervale in Clare, Crabtree wines was established in the early 80’s by then owner Robert Crabtree. Now, the estate is being run by Kerri Thompson the winemaker and together with Brendan Pudney and the current owners Richard Woods and Rasa Fabian. The estate consists of 13 hectares of the best Watervale vineyards plus a hundred tonne winery.

Morella Cottage Nursery. Found in Watervaleis another heritage cottage that has a beautiful garden that displays all the art work of Clare Valley, Morella Nursery is another place to go. The place gives their visitors the chance to shop with the most unique product of Clare Valley. Pastries and coffee are available during weekends.

Corella Hill Studio/Gallery. Another Watervale attraction is the Corella Hill Studio. This is the place where you will experience the best view over the vineyards, south of the valley. Art enthusiast will surelyenjoy the ambience of Murray’s working area and showroom. This is the place where you can share your thought together with other people visiting the place. Discuss about the works and also those that are still in progress. You could also enjoy a packed lunch at their verandas or under the trees’ shades.

Olssens of Watervale. Positioned in the north-western side of Watervale, the Olssen vineyard takes advantage with the steep valley sides that is causing a shading effect althrough out the area resulting to the best wines.

Stephen John Wines. For 25 years, owner Stephen John has been a winemaker. He came from a long line of coopers from the Barossa Valley. Early 1994, he then decided to put up a winery of his own. So he made one that has 7 hectares of vineyard that is all grown dry. He used a stable for his cellars that is 80 years old. Now, with his success, he renovated the place and is now has the best view of Watervale and its vineyards. Group tours are possible if you will make an appointment ahead of time.
